The Black Bull hotel as a coaching inn has been welcoming travellers for approximately 200 years. Every day at 8am the Eagle Star stagecoach used to leave Dunse for Edinburgh and the coach from Edinburgh would leave at 9am and arrive in Dunse at 3.45pm. The Dunse name changed back to the ancient spelling of Duns in 1882 – Duns was connected to Reston via rail in 1849. We can therefore assume the peak of the Eagle Star business was early 1800s to late 1800’s. In the early 20th century the building was trading as Misses Liddells Temperance Hotel before at some stage pre-living memory reverting back to the Black Bull Hotel.
In 2022 the hotel was acquired by the present owners who embarked on an extensive renovations project and the hotel was re-opened to the public in November 2024.
